Why this pou matters
The distance between people who can use digital and AI tools and those who cannot is growing quickly. That divide is following many of the same lines that already disadvantage our whānau.
Matihiko exists so Māori and Pasifika people can do more than adapt to these tools. We want our whānau creating with them, questioning them, shaping them and sharing in what they make possible.
What we are building
- AI fundamentals and practical AI literacy.
- Website building and coding.
- Digital creation and creative tools.
- Capability drawn from the creative-sector experience already held within the Trust.
One pou, two roles
Matihiko will stand alone for people who want digital and creative skills specifically. It will also run through the rest of Tangatake’s mahi: AI literacy in employment pathways, digital tools in leadership, and creative learning that meets rangatahi in the media they already use.
Accessibility is part of the design
Anything we build must work for people with limited internet access, low digital confidence, dyslexia, or a low likelihood of completing a self-directed task alone.
Voice recording, facilitated phone calls and staff-assisted entry will sit alongside online forms as equally valid ways to participate. A digital programme should reach the whānau who need it most, not only those already confident online.
