Pathways into mahi that can hold
Our first two named programmes sit within the Mahi pou. Both are designed around a simple belief: employment is more likely to last when identity, practical support, whānau and the workplace are part of the same pathway.
TREP
Tangatake Rangatahi Employment Programme
Designed and ready · Participant delivery has not yet begun
TREP is a kaupapa Māori pilot for rangatahi who are not currently in employment, education or training. It begins with who each person is, what they carry and what they want their life to become — then builds the practical pathway around that.
Who TREP is for
Rangatahi facing multiple barriers to returning to work, education or training. The first delivery is planned for the Kāpiti Coast, with a model designed to travel across the wider Wellington region.
What success looks like
Rangatahi move into sustained employment, education or training and remain connected to the support that helps them stay there. Outcomes are followed well beyond the start date because a placement that lasts only a few weeks is not the change we are here for.
The pathway
Discovery of the Path.A full-day wānanga exploring values, strengths, self-awareness, wellbeing, financial literacy, CV development and interview technique. Identity is not a warm-up to the ‘real’ work; it is the foundation.
Kaiārahi coaching. One-to-one navigation and wrap-around support to address the barriers that can stop progress in practice.
Chosen Pathway placement. Employment placements through local employer networks, including iwi businesses, community organisations and trades. Placements are matched to strengths and aspirations identified earlier.
Whānau alongside. Whānau are invited into the journey from intake through to a final celebration hākari. Their involvement is not ceremonial; it helps the pathway hold.
Partners
Volunteer Kāpiti provides access to employer networks and carries out organisational gap assessments. Graduates will be invited to mentor the cohorts behind them through a tuakana–teina model, strengthening the kaupapa with each rōpū.

TWEP is a dual-stream employment pathway delivered with Volunteer Kāpiti for Māori and Pasifika jobseekers. Priority is given to rangatahi, people who have been out of work long-term, parents and caregivers returning to work, and disabled and neurodiverse people.

Organisational gap assessment and skills matching
Led by Volunteer Kāpiti.
Local organisations are assessed to identify real capability gaps, not imagined roles. Those needs are brought into a skills database and used to make stronger matches between people and workplaces.
Current opportunity areas include web development, social media, content creation, marketing, HR support, events and project work, administration, bookkeeping, data entry, systems and reporting.
Stream Two · Designed and ready
Kaupapa Māori jobseeker readiness
Begins as referral pathways and delivery arrangements are confirmed.
The pathway combines full-day workshops, one-to-one coaching, values work and wrap-around support. It can begin with supported volunteering, then move through job-search support, employer engagement, placement and follow-up after the start date.
Volunteering is treated as a stepping stone, not a consolation prize. It gives people who are not yet ready to move directly into employment a place to build confidence, capability and connection at their own pace.
